The Contest Rules for 2008

SCT User 2008 Imaging Competition Rules

  1. The Competition is open to all members of the SCT-User mailing list. To participate in the contest, an entrant must be a member of the SCT-User mailing list. The contest will be open for entries beginning on 0 hours GMT on 1 October, 2008.

  2. Images must be taken with a Schmidt Cassegrain, Maksutov Cassegrain, Maksutov Newtonian, Schmidt Newtonian, Schmidt Camera, or other catadioptric telescope.

  3. Entries must be received by 0 hours GMT on 31 March 2009.

  4. Eligible entries must be acquired between 0 hours GMT 1 October 2008 and 0 hours GMT 31 March 2009.

  5. All entries must be submitted online (preferred) or by using the original form by email. If using the original form, entries must include the name of the entrant and the subject of the image in the file name. Images that lack this file-naming convention will not be accepted.

  6. Categories in the 2008 contest are:

    Category Name Category Number Category Defined
    Best Deep Sky Image with an Astronomical Camera 1 Best Astrophoto of a Deep Sky Object taken with a camera designed for astronomical imaging (SBIG camera, Starlight Xpress camera, Meade DSI, Stellacam, etc.).
    Best Solar System Image with an Astronomical Camera 2 Best Astrophoto of a Solar System Object-planet, comet, moon, etc.--taken with a camera marketed for astronomy. In addition to integrating CCD cameras, this can include Stellacams, LPIs, Neximagrers, and other cameras marketed for astronomy.
    Best Deep Sky Image with a Non-Astronomical Camera 3 Best Deep Sky image taken with an unconventional sensor. This may include modified webcams, DSLRs, and other non-astronomy marketed sensors.
    Best Solar System Image with a Non-Astronomical Camera 4 Best Astrophoto of a Solar System Object-planet, comet, moon, etc.--taken with a camera NOT marketed for astronomy. This will included webcams, firewire cameras, DSLRs, etc., not specifically marketed to astronomers.
    Master Class 5 If you consider yourself in the ranks of "The Best," this is where you strut your stuff. Images with any sensor and of any astronomical subject are allowed here. Judging standards will be high, and ONLY THE STRONGEST WILL SURVIVE. ;-)
    Please consult with the judging panel via the SCT-User Yahoo Group if you’re unsure
    which category your entry belongs in.

  7. Entries will be judged by a panel of volunteer judges with varying qualifications agreed upon by the SCT-User group community.

  8. ONE ENTRY IN EACH CATEGORY PER PERSON. You MAY re-submit any entry as necessary up until the contest deadline.

  9. Images submitted by contestants must not exceed a file size limit of 1 megabyte and must be submitted in JPG format only. Note that if the width dimension of your image is wider then 1280 pixels, the image will automatically be scaled down (proportionally) to be 1280 pixels wide for easier viewing and judging.

  10. Winners will be announced on a date to be announced by the judging panel and/or on the contest web site home page.

  11. Computer image processing is allowed for all entries, but processing applied to images must be described in the entry form.

  12. Winners will be notified by e-mail at a time to be determined by the judging panel, and will receive a certificate and/or other awards/prizes to be determined/announced.

  13. Entries will be posted on a webpage created specifically for the SCT-User Imaging Contest. By submitting an entry, the author is granting explicit permission to have the subject image posted on the contest webpage.

  14. Any category with less than five entries will not be eligible for prize awards or judging of entries (at the discretion of the judging panel).

Judging Criteria

Listed below are the criteria by which the submitted astrophotos/CCD images will be judged:

Guiding accuracy, quality of exposure, quality/accuracy of color (unless black and white), contrast, quality of focus, framing, presence of artifacts, overall aesthetics and image presentation.

Please note that the above is not all-inclusive, and that judges will evaluate the images as required in order to determine a winner.

The owners of and responsible individuals of this contest are neither liable nor responsible for intentional or unintentional misuse or representation of any image displayed herein. All images, displays, and use are at the sole risk of the image owner. The owners and responsible individuals of this contest are not responsible for the products or the quality of the products awarded by the sponsors (if any). Redress for products and quality must be addressed by the sponsor. All prize awards and decisions by the judges are final.

In addition, you agree to defend and indemnify us and hold us harmless from and against any and all claims, proceedings, damages, injuries, liabilities, losses, costs and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees caused by: (i) claims by any party for libel, slander, defamation, invasion of privacy, infringement of intellectual property rights including trademark, copyright or patent rights, and unlawful access or alteration to private records or data arising from any information, software, data or message transmitted, or received by us in connection with the SCT User Contest.
